A nearly 100 year tradition came to a close in 1993 as Southern Pacific made its last runs with its famous Sugar Beet Trains from Imperial Valley. You'll see SP's old wooden gondolas with their friction bearing trucks still being used.

Take a rare tour inside the Holly Sugar plant at Betteravia, California and learn how sugar is refined from sugar beets. You'll also take a cab ride along the California coast on one of the last Sugar Beet Trains.
Video Rails camera crews were on hand to record the ending of an era as the last sugar beet train pulled into Guadalupe, California. You'll see it as history closes its doors on one of the great legends of railroading as Video Rails brings you the only footage in existence recording this historical event... the Imperial Valley Sugar Beet Trains!
